Bio
Barrett has been sailing since he was 5 and loves to share his enthusiasm about the "motion of the ocean". He grew up on Long Island Sound, managed a charter company in the Caribbean, and lived and sailed in New England. He has deep passion for sailboats and all other things that float. Barrett holds the record for the top producer in Beneteau sales in North America and accomplished that through sincere care for his customers and the ability to listen to their needs and dreams. His greatest accomplishment is his family. He and his wife Liz have two daughters, Lily & Grace, son Rhodes, and as of June 2007, baby daughter Jane joined the sailing team. (the fleet is now complete!) Barrett also thinks he can surf and enjoys the local longboard breaks in So-Cal as often as he can. Please call or email Barrett with any thoughts or needs anytime and he'd be happy to help you with your specific needs, goals and desires. Here's What Barrett Canfield's Customers Have To Say...
Hi Barrett,
I just have to tell you once again how much fun we are having with Lea, our wonderful 373 and how incredibly blessed we were to meet you.
Last weekend (while you were in Catalina – we couldn’t go because of Andrew’s school commitments) we spent three days in La Playa cove with the Hoffman Family aboard our little girl and had the time of our lives. She is so livable with six aboard. It was just like camping out on the water and I know the three young boys with us will keep those memories for a lifetime. We plan on doing that again real soon.
I went sailing the other day by myself for about three hours in 15-17 knots of wind with two reefs in the genoa and our little 373 consistently hit 7.5 knots. I almost passed out from all the excitement of the day. She sailed so straight and true and was a snap to singlehand! I had an absolute blast. When I got in I met Rhonda and Kevin Wixom, who as you know own Blue Note (the 473 berthed next to Lea and the yacht we chartered with Captain Rob for Jenny’s 52nd birthday, had an absolute ball and voted to make it an annual tradition). The Wixom’s and I talked for about an hour about what great yachts Beneteau’s are and especially what a great guy you are for getting us into these fabulous sailboats. They also told me the Beneteau Rendevous a fantastic event, very well planned, full of wonderful participants and absolutely was something I just had to attend. They were so excited about it, I promised myself that we will make it next year, no matter what!
I can’t thank you enough for putting us in our Beneteau 373. It was the best investment I have ever made. Our family and friends love sailing that little yacht and I have never had more fun in my life than spending time on the water with folks I care about in that safe, great sailing little yacht!
I’m living a lifelong dream and am a very happy yacht owner, thanks to you and the great folks at Beneteau.
Take care,
Tim Wilson, B 373 "Lea"

Barrett,
Camille and I wanted to send along more formal thanks for all of SWYS's support for the B36.7 OD West Coast Championship regatta this weekend. Please thank your team for us, as well.
We have really enjoyed the boat and racing it, although we have only six months of experience. All of SWYS support on our various matters has really helped make owning this boat a pleasure.
Best Regards,

Dear Southwestern,
I can honestly say that this is the best salesperson (Barrett Canfield) and sales and service team that I have ever worked with. As a sales person/ manager myself, I would love to be able to put together as team as good as they are. Barrett has been super, far exceeding any of my expectations. Their after sales service always comes through. Thank you!!

Barrett:
You are a professional and a pleasure to do business with. You made the whole process smooth and made me feel like a special customer. Thank you and your entire group for all of your help and efforts. Warmly, Erwin Shustak 2005 Beneteau 393 "Lady J", San Diego.
Barrett,
Just a note to thank you. I am aware that you have gone way beyond the call of duty on this one and I am so thankful for all you have done. This love of sailing and the ocean is one that I gave up when my kids came along, and the opportunity to share it now with them means a great deal to me. It is amazing how the you and the entire team at Southwest was in on this surprise and I felt like a kid on his birthday. It was also a great pleasure to meet your wife and kids. I look forward to a growing friendship with you and your family over the coming years, sailing together and creating memories to last a lifetime.
Once again, thank you for all your efforts. It has made this entire experience enjoyable.
Sincerely,
John D. Henderson 2004 Beneteau 373 "Inspiration"

Hi Barrett,
We arrived in Ensenada after a brief panic with the chart plotter (which worked fine the rest of the way there!). Saturday was a perfect day to motor down--warm sun and cool breeze--not a hint of clouds or rain!
We just wanted to thank you again for making this boat purchase our best ever--from the "can-do" attitude in the beginning through the
"congratulations fanfare" at the delivery, we appreciated how we were
treated.
We also want to say thanks for those special little "extras" that were
unexpected--like the cushions and the welcome mat!! We also appreciated you letting us park our car in front of the office those couple of days--it really helped logistics!
We also are very pleased with the installation of the microwave! So, thanks for that too.
And, Peter Winslow was great! He was full of hints and tips from "backing up" the boat to where to eat in Ensenada!!
We are happy campers and just wanted to let you know!

Dear Southwestern Yacht Sales,
I feel like I'm writing to George Zimmer at Men's Warehouse, to tell about my experience buying a suit. But, Barrett Canfield is worth it. I recently bought a Catalina 42 that was listed through Barrett. I was not represented by a broker and needed a lot of hand holding. I particularly wanted to complete the purchase in only a few days so I would have the boat in time for my birthday.
Barrett was terrific! He walked me through the entire process, worked during his days off, was always accessible, and did "whatever it took" to get me aboard to spend my birthday with my family. Also, his service did not stop with my signing of the paperwork. He spent substantial time to go through the boats systems with me and kept following up to make sure I understood everything I needed to know to be comfortable in operating the boat. My experience was definitely the type that earns loyal clients and ensures "word of mouth" marketing. Many thanks and compliments to Barrett for a first class job!
Very truly yours,

Rich & Karen Keevers, 2000 Beneteau 44 CC.
We are the proud owners of a Beneteau 44 CC due to Barrett. Three summers ago we met Barrett Canfield. We then owned a Beneteau Oceanis 38. Barrett was convinced that a move up to a 44CC was exactly the boat that would full fill our needs. He was right and we began a relationship with Barrett that was not only professional but also personnel. We traded our 38 much sooner then planned and began the process of purchasing our new 44CC. Barrett was great. Always-there to help. After our vessel arrived we still had questions and issues that Barrett continued to take interest in and never left us hanging. Barrett made the transition a smooth one.
Our relationship with Barrett continued on through the years after our purchase. We've met his family and have socialized with them. He will be greatly missed and we're sure his knowledge, professionalism and upbeat personality will be a great asset in his ventures in Southern California.

"Barrett Canfield, I am pleased to provide my strong recommendation to both yourself, as a professional in the yachting industry, as well as my high recommendation to sailors with reference to the Beneteau Oceanis 461. Your exemplary service before and after the purchase of my yacht has been extraordinary and I really appreciate your efforts. You always went beyond the call of duty to meet my needs, and as a lifetime, professional salesman in the financial services industry I really valued your commitment to your clients. My Beneteau has performed beautifully and it is everything you said it would be. I believe I have received great value for my money and I recommend Beneteau and Barrett Canfield to everyone. Best Wishes for continued success."

"Since the purchase of our Van De Stadt 28, my girlfriend Michelle and I have been cruising the east coast on our way to warmer waters. We have been so impressed with the boat and with the help we have recieved before and after its purchase. Being as I was in the used boat market I honestly expected to buy not from a broker but from an actual owner to find my best deal. I found your broker Barrett Canfield to be absolutely candid as to all components, favorable and otherwise, of the boat I now call home. I dealt with many brokers from many companies who showed me many lesser boats, I remain grateful that I bought from your company and believe that alone is a testament to your business practices. Many thanks."

"First of all I would like to thank you for the outstanding sales advice and recommendations regarding fitting out the boat. I am absolutely thrilled with how the boat sails and looks. Even more important however is the commitment that you have shown in staying with us through the process ofcommissioning and learning to sail and operate the boat. When people notice my boat at marinas throughout New England I will not just recommend the boat, but make sure I give them your name and phone number (which is now eternally etched in my brain). Thanks!"

"I just wanted to take this opportunity to compliment Barrett on your professionalism and personalized approach to your business. In today's sales environment one rarely sees the follow-up and accessibility that you demonstrated during the sales process. This made the decision on purchasing a boat from Barrett extremely easy and also made a client as a opposed to just a customer.
In addition, I appreciate the fact that although the purchase price of my Beneteau was not $200,000, I still felt like I was treated with the same respect and attention of someone who is spending that amount. I would readily refer Barrett to someone shopping for a new or used boat."

"Over the past few years i have worked with Barrett through and have enjoyed a friendly and harmoniuos relationship with him. As a delivery captain, I would interact directly with new yacht owners who were very impressed with Barrett throughout the sales and follow up processes. I personally found him to do what he said he would, when he said he would. He achieved the coveted top gun award from Beneteau and with his upbeat and pleasant personality, he's a pleasure to be associated with."

" Barrett, your love and interest in the sport of sailing is where it all begins. You come across very relaxed and eager to learn what the customer wants and treats the customer the same whether you are at the beginning of a deal or years after the deal/sale was executed. This is extremely important in your line of business, especially as people move to larger boats or have different needs as their lives dictate. You obviously understand the importance of repeat business and your willingness to accept an owner's decision was very important to us, without feeling pressurized at anytime. You had identified our need as early on as when the 40.7 was barely in production. This says a lot.
I am sure that no matter where you are located, it will not make any difference in the way you conduct your business as a yacht broker. Your relationships will be there for many years to come. I know that even if you are on the other side of the US, I can call you and receive the usual prompt and courteous response as we are accustomed to receiving."
Regards - Gordon Fletcher, 2000 Beneteau First 40.7

I was first introduced to the Beneteau 411 by Barrett. He was extremely helpful in understanding all aspects of the boat and its available options. More importantly, he was honest with me. As you probably know, choosing a boat always results in compromises, i.e. conveniences such as roller furling main vs. speed, etc. Barrett was honest about the pluses and minuses of different boats and features. He did not try to oversell a boat. He was patient with my many questions and pauses for reflection and decision-making. I enjoyed working with Barrett and thank him for his assistance.

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know what a great sailing year I had. Not only was it a beautiful summer on the Cape, but the Beneteau 411 is the perfect combination of performance, classic appearance and comfort. My family which numbers six used it as our second home where "every room has a view" as we fondly refer to it. The kids look forward to every weekend. The Doyle StackPack that you recommended is especially working out well since it gives so much extra sail area, is fully battened and footed to the boom. I appreciate all your help and suggestions in selecting and commissioning my boat. I hope all is going well for you and your family in your new location.
Please feel free to use me as a reference if you need one.
