Service Tips and Tricks
ALL VESSELS: DSC Capable VHF Radios
All new boats are being delivered with DSC capable VHF radio's but the DSC capability has to be activated by the owner of the vessel.
DSC stands for Digital Selective Calling. It requires two things to function
properly: GPS information, which Nautical Enterprises always does as a standards procedure, and input by the owner of an MMSI number. This is a nine digit pin number that can be acquired from various online sources.
www.boatus.com/mmsi/ is a link where you can apply for your Maritime Mobile Service Identity number (MMSI). Once you have been issued this number, get out your VHF manual and there will be a section that explains how to enter this number into your radio. Once you have done this, your Radio is fully DSC capable. This means that when you activate the distress button on you VHF, it will automatically start transmitting a digital distress signal that also includes your MMSI and your vessels position. This is a wonderful feature I'm sure you'll agree and well with the trouble to take the time to activate. It involves about five minutes on line and five minutes with your VHF owners manual.

South of the Border.......
We all got an email from Doug a month ago saying we were going to have the manager's retreat in Mexico! The first thing a lot of us thought of was Margaritas and beaches, but instead of serving ourselves, we all went down and built a house for a very poor family in the eastern hills of Tijuana.
Below is a link to my pictures of the weekend and here are some facts:
To qualify, this family had to make less than $200./ month total income.
They were chosen by the pastor of their church
The “house” that they lived in was made of broken chicken wire, cardboard, plywood, and a tarp. (see pics)
There is no running water and their bathroom is a hole dug in the ground with a toilet placed on top.
We built the house in about 8 hours with 21 people working.
The cost of the house was donated by Nautical Enterprises (Southwestern Yachts & H&S Yachts)
The pastor “Hector” was once the recipient of this gift and now helps build 200-250 houses per year.
The family showed us their monthly bills for prescriptions of $74. (under $200. income)
The wife cried when Michael handed her the keys.
We all had the opportunity to bring housewarming gifts for the family.
When I took off my hat, the children laughed at my bald head (what?)
I heard someone in our group say that it is great to give to someone who cannot return the favor. The experience made you realize the importance of the simplest things in life and that the biggest gift is serving others. It was great to see our management team and executives out of their element working together for this family. Enjoy the pictures. –Burrito (Mexican for Barrett)
